Regarding Safety of Multipurpose Solutions
April 12, 2006
In recent weeks, there have been several reports of fungal keratitis among
contact lens wearers in certain Asian nations and in the U.S. To our
knowledge, none of these reported infections have been attributed to any AMO
products. In light of the heightened interest in this issue, however, AMO
has reviewed the data concerning our COMPLETE® multi-purpose solutions and
reaffirmed the safety of these products. This affirmation is based on the
stringent pre-market testing required for our products, the rigorous quality
system under which they are designed and manufactured and the global safety
history of the products. We carefully monitor all reports of adverse events.
This product has an excellent safety record. We continue to stand behind our
contact lens disinfecting systems, including COMPLETE® multi-purpose
solutions and Ultracare® disinfecting peroxide systems.
We consider any lens-related infection to be serious and remind all contact
lens wearers of the following important cleaning guidelines:
- Wash and dry hands before putting on or removing lenses
- Always clean your contact lens case by rinsing it with COMPLETE®
solution and allowing it to air dry
- Do not wear lenses beyond the recommended period
- Never reuse solution
- Do not touch the tip of the solution bottle to any surface
- Remove and stop using lenses if you experience unusual eye symptoms;
seek medical consultation if necessary
